HORROR WEEK: Who's laffing now?

I used to collect these as a kid. I even, God help me, used to find them funny. It was a different time. I drew the line at the dusty slab of day glo coloured gum that came in the packet, however, even I wasn't that stupid.

God completely forgot about these. I only came across them once, bought with a couple of Vimto lollies from the corner shop near my grandparents in Bolton.

They were quite a find because they seemed a touch out of step with the times, antiquated and special compared to the Empire Strikes Back or whatever cards I would buy in Liverpool then. Though time seemed to move slower in Bolton, so it did feel peculiarly fitting to find them there (an amber aura of 1973 seemed to perpetually hang above the town even into the early eighties). Trouble was I was too embarrassed to show them off to anyone back in Liverpool because they were desecrated by those awful jokes.

I found the "Who starched my cape?" one quite amusing...
